about

I put together the Transcription Education Project as a reaction to a reflection of my own early Jazz education. I remember distinctly being told to transcribe great improvisations by virtuosic musicians and finding it to be an extremely intimidating and difficult task at first - I simply was unable to execute many of the ideas that I was listening to, even after figuring out the notes and rhythms. This project is an effort to ease student musicians into the (extremely vital) transcription process for the first time.

I was fortunate enough to get a group of some of Iowa's finest jazz musicians together for an afternoon and record this project with their talents. These tracks are aimed at beginning and intermediate improvisors who are entering into the world of aural transcription for the first time.
